YAWN Life was set up by 2 parents who recognised that adults with learning disabilities needed more choice of daytime activities. Direct payments/personal budgets make choice possible but choices are limited and individual care may lead to social isolation and increased dependence on 1 to 1 support.
The creation of YAWN Life was driven by our personal experiences as parents of 2 young adults with learning disabilities, our experiences as trustees of YAWN and volunteers for Luton Mencap our contact with many
people with learning disabilities and their parents and carers our involvement in various forums and strategic groups around service development
YAWN is a registered charity which has been providing evening and occasional weekend activities, since2006, for sociable young adults with learning disabilities. As trustees of that charity we felt more needed to be done to provide purposeful daytime activities.
After seeking advice we decided that a Community Interest Company would enable us to compete in a commercial market, become self sustaining and therefore more secure. However it would also ensure that charitable principles and user involvement would drive service development, with all funds being ploughed into those services.
As a Community Interest Company, YAWN Life is non-profit making and works closely within the community and with other charitable organisations to the mutual benefit of all the organisations, their clients and the community.
We strongly believe that adults with learning disabilities need activities to keep them occupied and they continue learning and developing well into adulthood. The skills we promote and spport are the life skills that are needed to be as independent as possible and to be
valued in their community.
Supporting parents and carers to understand the changes their cared for person faces through adulthood will help them and their families get the very best out of life.
